Lesson 6.1 – Reflecting on Your Leadership Journey
Leadership development begins with awareness. Throughout this course, you have explored several important leadership competencies including communication, decision making, motivation, and team management.
Reflection allows leaders to pause and consider how their behaviour, decisions, and communication affect the people around them.
Why reflection is important
Leaders who regularly reflect on their experiences are better able to recognise what works well and what could be improved. Reflection helps leaders become more intentional about their actions.
Instead of reacting automatically to situations, reflective leaders consider how their choices influence their team.
Questions for leadership reflection
You can use the following questions to guide your reflection:
- What leadership concepts from this course stood out most to you?
- What leadership strengths do you believe you already have?
- What challenges do you face when leading or working with others?
- How do you typically respond when things go wrong at work?
- What type of workplace environment do you want to help create?
Workplace example
A team leader may notice that employees rarely speak during team meetings. After reflecting on this situation, the leader realises that meetings are often rushed and there is little time for discussion.
By adjusting the meeting structure and inviting more participation, the leader creates a more open and collaborative environment.
Key takeaway
Reflection helps leaders become more aware of their behaviour and its impact on others. This awareness is an important step in leadership growth.
