Course Content

Introduction to the Enneagram
This module introduces the Enneagram as a powerful framework for understanding personality, motivation, and behaviour. Learners will explore the origins of the Enneagram, how it developed into a modern psychological tool, and why it is widely used today in leadership development, coaching, counselling, and workplace environments. The module also explains how the Enneagram differs from other personality systems by focusing on core motivations and unconscious patterns rather than surface behaviours. Students will begin developing self-awareness and learn how the Enneagram can improve communication, emotional intelligence, and personal development within the South African workplace.

  • What is the Enneagram?
  • The History and Development of the Enneagram
  • Why Self-Awareness Matters in the Workplace
  • Reflection Exercise: Understanding Your Behaviour Patterns
  • Quiz – Introduction to the Enneagram

The Three Centres of Intelligence
This module introduces one of the most important foundations of the Enneagram: the Three Centres of Intelligence. These centres explain how people primarily experience and respond to the world through the Body (Instinct/Gut), Heart (Feeling/Image), or Mind (Thinking/Fear). Learners will explore how these centres shape behaviour, emotional responses, communication styles, and decision-making in personal and professional contexts. Understanding the three centres provides the framework needed to study the nine Enneagram types in greater depth. In the South African workplace, where people often work across diverse teams, roles, and communication styles, this knowledge helps learners recognise why different people react differently under pressure, in conflict, and in leadership situations.

The Body Centre Types: Type 8, Type 9 and Type 1
This module explores the three Enneagram types that belong to the Body Centre: Type 8, Type 9, and Type 1. These types are connected through instinct, action, control, tension, and their relationship with anger, although each expresses these patterns in very different ways. Learners will examine the core motivations, fears, workplace behaviours, strengths, and challenges of each type. Special attention is given to how these patterns can appear in leadership, teamwork, communication, and conflict within the South African workplace. By the end of this module, learners will better understand how Body Centre types respond to pressure, how they seek control or stability, and how they can grow toward healthier and more balanced ways of working and relating.

The Heart Centre Types: Type 2, Type 3 and Type 4
This module explores the three Enneagram types that belong to the Heart Centre: Type 2, Type 3, and Type 4. These types are primarily concerned with identity, relationships, image, emotional connection, and the desire to feel valued. Learners will examine how these types interpret success, belonging, and recognition, and how emotional awareness influences communication, leadership, and teamwork. The module also explores how Heart Centre types manage feelings of shame, approval, and personal identity. In the South African workplace, where relationships, community dynamics, and collaboration play a major role in professional success, understanding the Heart Centre can significantly improve communication, leadership effectiveness, and emotional intelligence.

The Mind Centre Types: Type 5, Type 6 and Type 7
This module explores the three Enneagram types belonging to the Mind Centre: Type 5, Type 6, and Type 7. These types primarily process the world through thinking, planning, analysis, and anticipation. Learners will examine how these types respond to uncertainty, risk, and decision-making, and how their thinking patterns influence behaviour, communication, and leadership in professional environments. Special attention is given to how Mind Centre types manage fear, security, preparation, and possibility. Understanding these patterns helps individuals recognise how thinking styles influence workplace problem-solving, collaboration, and leadership. In the South African workplace, where uncertainty, economic pressure, and rapid change often require adaptability, the strengths of Mind Centre types—strategic thinking, preparedness, and innovation—can play an important role in organisational success.

Growth, Stress, Wings and Personal Development
This module explores how the Enneagram describes personality development and growth. Learners will examine how each type can move toward healthier behaviour under conditions of growth and integration, as well as how stress can influence behaviour and decision-making. The module also introduces the concept of wings, which describe how neighbouring Enneagram types influence personality expression. Understanding wings helps explain why individuals with the same core type may behave differently. This module emphasises the spiritual, emotional, and somatic aspects of the Enneagram by helping learners recognise how awareness of their patterns can lead to greater self-regulation, emotional maturity, and personal growth in both personal and professional environments.

Applying the Enneagram in the Workplace
This final module focuses on practical applications of the Enneagram in professional environments. Learners will explore how personality awareness can improve leadership, communication, teamwork, and conflict management. The module emphasises how understanding personality differences can strengthen collaboration, emotional intelligence, and decision-making within organisations. In the South African workplace, where teams often consist of diverse backgrounds, cultures, and communication styles, personality awareness can play an important role in improving workplace relationships and organisational effectiveness.
